Madrid, 24 July 2013. Mahou San Miguel, a 100% Spanish-owned company and the nation's leading brewer, has been chosen to receive the 1st United Nations Global Compact Network Award in the big business category for its "Nolotiro" campaign. The initiative, undertaken by its San Miguel 0.0% brand and translating as "Don’t dump it", aims to arrest food wastage at catering establishments, as part of the company's commitment to the AECOC Food Waste initiative to optimise surplus food.

This represents the Global Compact signatories' recognition of the campaign launched by the brand in bars and restaurants, allowing diners to take away any uneaten food in the "Nolotiro" boxes made from recycled materials. A worthwhile effort, since each year more than 63,000 tonnes of food is binned by Spain's bars and restaurants, enough to feed the entire population of Toledo and Segovia for a year.

The initiative forms a part of a broader San Miguel 0.0% project: the 0.0 Citizen Movement, which aims to achieve a better world through incremental actions in our daily lives. As well as making use of food by means of the "Nolotiro" boxes, it also focuses on promoting a healthy lifestyle, care for the environment, sustainable mobility and the consumption of fresh, seasonal produce.

The United Nations Global Compact is an international initiative which aims to implement 10 basic principles of conduct and action in the fields of Human Rights, Employment Regulations, the Environment and Anti-Corruption within the company's daily operations and strategy. The aim of the project is to create a sense of global corporate citizenship, balancing the demands of civil society, the third sector, trade unions and educational institutions with the interests and processes of business activities.

Corporate Responsibility a core issue for Mahou San Miguel

Mahou San Miguel views Corporate Social Responsibility as a strategic goal, and so undertakes numerous initiatives in the field, incorporating this approach across all company departments, with monitoring indicators which are included in its corporate scorecards. With the aim of leading the shift towards a more sustainable environment and becoming a flagship for CSR in the food and drink sector, it has drawn up its 2013-2017 Strategic Plan under the claim "An Active Commitment". This is based on six operational strands: ethical business management, responsible consumption, nutrition and health, people, responsible marketing, local commitment, and water and climate change.

It is the only company in the drinks sector to have been awarded the "Company Equality" badge by the Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality in recognition of its progress in this field, and was the first brewing company to agree an Equality Plan for its employees in Spain. It was likewise a pioneer in Family Friendly Company certification, issuing specific undertakings which help to balance working and family life and to avoid any type of discrimination.
