Madrid, 28 January 2020.- Mahou San Miguel, a 100% Spanish-owned company and leader in the country’s brewing sector, has signed an agreement for the sale of its Mahou India subsidiary to a local industrial group. The company, with a presence in India since 2012, had made a significant commitment to this market, which initially met its expectations, but its results have been well below projections since 2018. All of this, aggravated by the COVID-19 crisis, has led the brewer to take this decision.

In the current context of the pandemic, Mahou San Miguel is prioritizing investments and projects to continue assuring its future sustainability, with special attention to the situation of the Spanish market, redirecting investments to support its on-trade customers, protecting jobs and advancing in the area of sustainability, thereby assuming an important role in the country’s economic recovery.

Nonetheless, internationalization remains a key axis for development of its business, focused on the U.S. market and with an eye to the craft sector. The experience in India added great value to the company through important lessons learned that have contributed to the development of a more robust future international strategy, and it has enabled the professional growth of its team.

Mahou San Miguel is present in 70 countries and produces over 70% of the Spanish beer consumed in the world.
